Our newsletter subscribers will know that we have just sent out the second instalment of our newsletter series the ‘Hearts & Minds Behind…” In case you missed the first of these, when we spoke to Anna Ross of Kester Black, this series is a get-to-know-you with our wonderful suppliers. They’re telling us the start-up stories of their brands, as well as sharing their inspiration and the best kept secrets in their local areas! This time around we spoke with Deb Clifford-Ames, one half of the hearts and minds behind the luxurious, beautifully designed organic cotton bed linen range of Sheets on the Line. We raved about Sheets on the Line on the blog recently, and we cannot recommend their bed linen enough! It is simply wonderful – gorgeous, soft organic cotton printed with designs inspired by urban, coastal and botanical landscapes. You can mix and match to suit your moods and whims, because each patterned piece fits into a larger, Sheets on the Line aesthetic. They have a range of single colour bedsheets and quilt covers too. If you’re not already looking forward to slipping between your sheets of an evening, the smooth cotton of these will change that!

Tell us a little about the path that led you to creating your products. What’s your history, and how does it inform what you’re doing now?
I studied Fashion at university, so throughout my career I have designed clothing to bridal wear to house interiors and soft furnishings. I’ve been a florist and worked in retail. Steven has been a Watchmaker/Jeweller, a Business Broker to a Business Development Manager. So between the two of us we tick most of the boxes required to fulfill the inner workings of the bedlinen business!
How would you describe your work?
We focus on simplicity in style, quality, and a product that has longevity and flexibility to change and coordinate easily whilst maintaining manufacturing integrity. Being eco conscious, producing only the softest and best organic fabrications is premium.
What elements are important to you when it comes to designing, conceiving, imagining a product?
Architecture and nature provide the inspiration and functionality greatly influences the final product. We endeavour to create products which coordinate with past designs but are fresh and simple to create a new look.
If you had to choose, which of your products would you say is your favourite?
That’s like choosing a favourite child! I do love our new 100% linen range which is just about to hit the shelves, as we have researched it for 2 years to find the right softness and quality we longed for. But this doesn’t mean I love all the others any less!
What does a regular work day for you entail?
Many hats! Now that we have a retail store, my day can go from customer service to design to production. My husband Steven’s day entails web site maintenance to accounts to warehouse management. Small business requires all jobs in one day.
Are you a lone wolf, or do you collaborate with others? If so, is this a rewarding process?
At the moment we design and produce all of our products ourselves, but would certainly love to embark on a collaboration or two in the future. It’s so exciting and enriching to be able to expand your creative and business experience further afield than your own office.
What’s the most pleasurable part of your work?
The travel, the people and the exposure to options.
What can we look forward to in the future from Sheets on the Line?
A lot more! We have lots of ideas and plans in the pipeline.
What’s the best-kept secret in your neck of the woods?
At the moment, our store, because it’s so new!
A HUGE thank you to Deb and Steve for taking the time to thoughtfully answer all our questions and share the story of Sheets on the Line with us.
A range of gorgeous Sheets on the Line organic cotton bed linen is in-store now!
